If you have iPhone you can still use it because the Google Home app is available in the app store and Google TV also has the Apple TV app. It’s faster and easier to find what you want since you don’t have to go through each app or remember what show is where. It’s cheaper than buying a smart TV and you only have to use one remote for most things. While I still use Roku in the bedroom I am planning to replace it with a Chromecast soon. Which is My Pick?Ĭhromecast is a win for me. Not all apps are available yet, but since you can cast from your phone you can work around it. You can set it to display your photos as the screensaver and it automatically shuts off the tv after about 30 minutes if the screensaver is on. So I cast TikTok, Twitch live streams for Chris, and videos from sites that I couldn’t before. You can also cast from your android devices or windows pc. The voice remote is also nice when your hands are full or you just don’t want to type a search. No more getting up to turn it up or down which is a pain when watching a movie with loud parts. I didn’t know until setting up the Chromecast and it asked what brand the TV was that it could do those things. ![]() We also had to just leave it on 24/7 for the same reason. Our TV is old and the remote is broken so to change the volume we had to get up and use the buttons on the TV. It is much faster than the Roku and the remote can actually control the TV. It also displays stuff you are currently watching on the home screen so you can pick it back up without searching again. You just put in what you want and it pops up what app has it. If youre all-in on Android for your media purchases, youre. The thing that made me want to get it was because you can search all your apps without going through each one. Right now, Chromecast is pretty much your only option if you want to stream media from Google Play TV and Movies and Google Music. This one requires being plugged into an outlet, but that’s ok because we don’t really use the blue-ray player. This is useful if I fall asleep watching in the bedroom, but not during the day while I’m doing stuff and listening to it. It also returns to the home screen after a few hours unless you catch the “are you still watching?” message to stop it. It’s also a pain trying to remember what app has what shows or movies I want to watch so there’s a lot of flipping back and forth. One issue was with them battling Google over carrying YouTube TV had me worried I’d eventually lose access to that app. ![]() I like that it doesn’t have to be plugged into the wall so I can keep other things plugged in and the Roku channel is full of shows and movies for free. I have older Roku devices so not all apps can be added (like Peacock) and they can be a bit slow at times, but they allow me to watch all of my shows and I could cast my YouTube playlist to it. ![]() Keep reading to find out if it converted me from being a Roku lover. Roku was the popular choice for a long time and I have two, but recently I got a Chromecast with Google TV. We still want to watch our shows on our TVs with those services, but not all of us have smart TVs so we get devices to make our TVs smart. Cable and satellite are quickly becoming a thing of the past with streaming services becoming more popular.
